Electrolyte analysis

An analysis of electrolytes in the body is one of the key tests prescribed for patients with chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, endocrine disorders, eating disorders, as well as those taking diuretics and glucocorticosteroids – in other words, medicines that affect electrolyte metabolism in the human body.

Electrolytes are organic and inorganic compounds and salts which, when dissolved in water, break down into:

1.  Anions (chloride, bicarbonate, organic acids and phosphate) are negatively charged ions;
2.  Cations (magnesium, sodium, calcium and potassium) are positively charged ions.

An electrolyte imbalance leads to significant heart rhythm disturbances and either high or, conversely, low blood pressure.
