Water Purification Systems

Water purification systems for medical laboratories are specialised pieces of equipment designed to remove dissolved salts, organic substances, microorganisms, particles and gases from tap water. They ensure the production of ultrapure water that meets the stringent standards required for carrying out analyses, culturing, preparing reagents and operating medical equipment.

In addition to the general classification (Type I, II, III), systems are often configured for specific applications:
  • For PCR diagnostics and genetics: The system must have a module ultrafiltration. This produces water free from nucleases (RNase/DNase), which prevents the degradation of DNA/RNA samples.
  • For automatic biochemical analysers: What matters here is not so much ultra-purity as a steady flow and capacity. Type II systems with large storage tanks (15–100 litres) are often used.
  • For trace element analysis (ICP-MS): Systems are required that minimise plastic leaching (using special housing materials) and have an ultra-low ion content.

BIOBASE water treatment systems are comprehensive solutions for producing reverse osmosis (RO), deionised (DI) and ultrapure water directly from the tap. The equipment is divided into several series depending on its capacity and the required level of purification.

Main equipment ranges:
Series Water type Productivity Features.
SCSJ-I / II RO and DI 10–30 litres per hour Compact benchtop models for general laboratory use.
SCSJ-IV / V RO or RO+DI 45–125 litres per hour Average performance, intelligent microcomputer control.
SCSJ-VI / VII RO and Ultrapure 45–125 litres per hour For high-precision analyses, PCR and cell cultures.
BK-UP Ultra-pure (Type I) 20–60 litres per hour Specific resistance up to 18.2 MΩ·cm; removal of endotoxins and nucleases.
SCSJ-II (Large) Industrial 300–1,000 litres per hour For large laboratories or centralised supply.
Key technologies and stages of purification
BIOBASE systems use a multi-stage process to ensure high quality:
  • Preparation: PP filters and activated carbon for removing particles, chlorine and organic compounds.
  • Reverse osmosis (RO): Removal of up to 99% of salts, bacteria and viruses using nano-membranes.
  • Deionisation (DI): the use of ion-exchange columns to achieve a high specific resistance.
  • Ultraviolet sterilisation: UV lamps for destroying microorganisms and reducing TOC levels.
  • Ultrafiltration: to remove pyrogens and RNases (in models for molecular biology).
