The herpes simplex virus (HSV) belongs to the alpha-virus subfamily of the Herpesviridae family. The two closely related viruses are designated as HSV types 1 and 2. HSV-1 is the main cause of orolabial infection (gingivostomatitis or cold sores), whilst HSV-2 is the main cause of genital infection. However, both viruses can affect any part of the body. There are several methods for diagnosing infections caused by HSV. Serology can detect both current and past HSV infections. It is also used in studies of the epidemiology of HSV and is very useful in non-standard clinical situations. The antibody response to HSV glycoprotein G (gG) is highly specific, and gG-based tests can accurately determine whether individuals have been infected with HSV-1 in the past. HSV-1 is responsible for the majority of cases of oral-facial herpes and herpetic encephalitis. The presence of IgG antibodies to HSV-1 in blood serum indicates a previous infection. A significant increase in the level of HSV-1 IgM antibodies indicates reactivation of the corresponding herpes simplex virus or a recent infection.
