Description
- The inner surface of the tubes is prepared by spraying with potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride and drying.
- Used in clinical chemistry laboratories, the active ingredient is potassium oxalate, which blocks calcium ions in the blood and prevents blood clotting.
- Sodium fluoride is used to prevent glycolysis in the blood.
- They are known as glucose tubes.
- They are used to measure glucose levels and to store certain substances, such as ethanol, for a long time. Antiglycolytic agents preserve glucose for up to 5 days.
- Blood with oxalate can be used to determine haemoglobin, count red and white blood cells, and determine haematocrit; and by separating the plasma, it can be used for many biochemical analyses.
- Blood with oxalate is not suitable for the study of acid-base balance, as well as for the determination of electrolytes and some methods of calcium determination. The determination of some enzymes, such as oxalate, lactate dehydrogenase, is negatively affected. Blood with oxalate should not be used for smears because it causes degenerative changes in the nuclei.
